Axiom is seeking a Meteorologist I to join our team in providing technical support services to the Sterling Field Support Center (SFSC). The overall objective of this program is to operate and maintain a state-of-the-art meteorological laboratory/facility for the evaluation and life cycle support of equipment and software used to make meteorological observations.

Responsibilities of the Meteorologist I include investigating atmospheric phenomena and interpreting meteorological data, gathered by surface and air stations, satellites, and radar to prepare reports and forecasts for public and other uses.

This position requires a B.S. or equivalent in Meteorology and familiarity with weather data collection systems.

Position Description

The meteorologist, under general supervision, supports the life cycle of a meteorological observing system from design to deployment. The meteorologist performs scientific environmental tests, analyzes test data, develops test reports and technical material for observing systems, supports the field as a Subject Matter Expert, and deploys and trains field personnel on observing systems. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Obtain an upper air observing certification within 30 days of employment
    • Long-term employment contingent on meeting this requirement
  • Conduct test and evaluation activities of meteorological observing systems
  • Develop documentation related to sensor and system operation, maintenance, and training
  • Prepare test plans and reports for new sensors, systems, or software
  • Assist with the deployment of systems to off-site locations
    • Requires travel
  • Conducting system acceptance tests
  • Training meteorologists/ technicians on how to use the radiosonde system
  • Professionally communicating in occasional tense environments
  • Hours may include weekends and overnight shifts for training purposes
  • Evaluation of sensors and system performance with respect to NWS specifications and requirements
  • Real-time on-site weather observations in support of meteorological sensor testing during non-business hours/weekends/holidays
  • Provide status briefings to government clients on the progress of testing or deployment

Other responsibilities may include supporting field operations during 0z and 12z synoptic soundings, laboratory upkeep, and inventory of assets. Work hours may be a combination of normal business hours, routine scheduled shift work (for 0z and 12z operational sounding support) which may include some weekends, and on-demand hours driven by test schedule.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Meteorology or similar scientific discipline
  • 0-2 years of experience in the Setup, configuration, and design of scientific tests
  • 0-2 years utilizing data analysis tools such as MS Excel
  • 0-2 years being able to multi-task and have outstanding verbal and written communication (MS Office)
  • Ability to work with an inter-disciplinary and diverse team of scientists and technicians
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs

Desired Skills

  • Ability to setup meteorological observing systems in adverse environmental conditions
  • Background with LabView, MATLAB, or Python
  • Understanding of meteorological sensors and NWS Observing Programs
  • Hands-on experience with new and emerging meteorological instruments and equipment
  • Strong technical document writing
