As a key member of the Product Development team, the VP, Product Development, for transportation will report to the EVP of Product Development and will be responsible for managing the transportation development team activities, on a global basis for COMPANY’s transportation business (asset management and fleet management). This position will provide hands-on, detailed direction to product development leads, program managers, and other cross-functional teams engaged in technical support of the transportation business and will manage COMPANY’s Innovation Framework process for product development. The VP, Product Development, for transportation, is responsible for ensuring COMPANY achieves world-class execution in the development and delivery of our transportation solution. The person in this position must have the ability to work across multiple internal cross-functional groups, lead and facilitate multi-discipline technical tasks required to deliver on product development commitments, as well as communicate across all levels of a customer's organization (technical and management). Role Responsibilities : Responsible for the execution of product development tasks, activities, and programs in support of key business activities within COMPANY’s Transportation business Manage transportation development programs, ensure compliance with Product Development Innovation Framework process. Develop and maintain development baseline (program scope, time phased budget and schedule) and report program metrics versus baseline. Responsible for executing program per baseline and successfully meeting program requirements on time and within budget. Responsible for development risk management including risk identification, development of risk mitigation plans, and providing risk management briefings to Sr. Management. Lead, organize, direct, and coordinate activities of assigned development personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within budget. Build and coordinate the efforts of contributing organizations into an effective development team (customer, vendors, OEM suppliers, test facilities, development partners, etc.). Lead development team meetings and prepare monthly project reports (PMR) to keep management and other functional areas informed of project status, accomplishments, and related issues. Manage EPL deliverables, Tier 3 issues, and support business as required. Follow company and department guidelines and procedures Key Career Experiences : Minimum of 5-10 years experience in management of product development programs. Prior experience within companies providing products/services in telecommunications, information technology, or software as a service (SaaS). Experience within the telematics and M2M industries is a plus. Experience being a member of a product development team engaged in the development, manufacture, and deployment of products/services. Experience being a Program Manager or Technical Manager of a major development project Knowledge and Skill Requirements : Ability to form strategic vision for development program and place day-to-day efforts in the broader context of the program and the customer’s current needs. Ability to communicate effectively and to relate development program information in written or oral mediums to development teams, functional management, customers and Sr. Management. Experience in problem solving and decision making with an ability to form a methodical approach to investigating problems, identifying causes, proposing alternative solutions, and making decisions. Experience in developing cross-functional teams and the ability to effectively integrate functional resources and program goals. Experience as development team leader with the ability to improve the performance of the team by motivating and guiding individuals to apply relevant skills. Ability to process development program data to distill important information and identify appropriate program actions to achieve results. Experience in managing program budget and schedule with the ability to keep track of the details of program planning and execution. B.S in technical or management discipline (Required) MS or MBA (Desired) Leadership Qualities : Demonstrated capability functioning in a matrixed, multi-disciplined technical environment requiring strong influencing skills. Market focused with quick thinking, keen ability to formulate a solution to program problems and challenges in order to meet customer milestones. Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams such as sales, marketing, product management, and engineering to identify program risks and mitigation plans. Firm understanding of customer relationship management, the benefits of customer driven innovation, and the value of customer satisfaction. Requires strong inter-personal skills to hold team members accountable for delivering on program commitments. Requires strong written and verbal customer communication skills to manage customer expectations
