As part of our First Source Employment Agreement with the District of Columbia, Nicomedia Steel is committed to hiring, training, and retaining District residents in skilled construction trades. Project Location & Work Assignment This position will support structural steel erection and related activities at the following District of Columbia project site: - FEMS Fleet Maintenance Facility & OSSE Southwest Bus Terminal 6 DC Village Lane SW, Washington, DC In addition to DC jobsite work, regular travel to Nicomedia Steel’s fabrication facility in Sterling, Virginia is required. The Sterling, VA shop is used for steel fabrication, material staging, pre-assembly, and equipment coordination. Applicants must be able to reliably commute to both Washington, DC project sites and Sterling, VA (approximately 60-mile radius). Position Summary We are seeking a skilled Journeyman Structural Iron Worker & Erector to perform steel erection, installation, and field operations on District of Columbia public projects, including the FEMS Fleet Maintenance Facility & OSSE Southwest Bus Terminal. The ideal candidate is experienced, safety-focused, and capable of working at heights while coordinating closely with field supervision and fabrication teams. This position is subject to the District of Columbia First Source Employment Program, and District residents are strongly encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities - Erect, connect, and install structural steel, joists, decking, and miscellaneous metals. - Perform field work at the FEMS Fleet Maintenance Facility & OSSE Southwest Bus Terminal (6 DC Village Lane SW). - Read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and erection plans. - Rig materials, signal cranes, and assist with safe lifting operations. - Perform bolting, welding (if certified), cutting, and fit-up work. - Work at heights using fall protection systems in compliance with OSHA standards. - Support fabrication-related activities at the Sterling, VA steel fabrication shop, including material prep, staging, and coordination. - Participate in daily safety meetings and maintain compliance with company safety policies. - Coordinate with foremen, project managers, and other trades on site. Required Skills & Experience - Journeyman-level experience in structural iron work and steel erection. - OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification (or ability to obtain). - Ability to safely work at heights, on lifts, and on scaffolding. - Proficiency in bolting, rigging, and structural steel connections. - Ability to commute reliably to Washington, DC project sites and Sterling, VA. - Strong safety awareness and attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications - Welding certifications (SMAW / FCAW) - NCCER certification or union ironworker training - Rigging and crane signaling certification - Experience on DC public works or government-funded projects First Source Employment Program Notice This position is covered under the District of Columbia First Source Employment Agreement.
